Live Text Blocks

Send text-only sections as editable Klaviyo or Omnisend text blocks instead of images — what qualifies, why it's off by default, and how to turn it on.

By default, Carvr uploads every section of your design as an image, so it renders in your ESP pixel-for-pixel with your Figma design. Live text blocks is an opt-in setting that sends a specific kind of section — plain text on a single solid background — as a native, editable text block in Klaviyo or Omnisend instead of an image.

It applies to uploads made from the Figma plugin, which can read the real text in your design. Designs uploaded to the Carvr web app always become images: the web app only has a flattened picture of the design, with no editable text to pull out.

What qualifies

A section becomes a live text block only when it is text on one solid background colour — nothing else behind the text. If the section has a photo, a gradient, more than one background colour, or any graphics behind the copy, it stays an image so it renders exactly as designed. Every other section in the email is unaffected and still uploads as an image.

Why it's off by default

A live text block keeps the colours you set, but many email clients (Apple Mail, Gmail, Outlook) apply their own dark-mode transform that can re-colour text and backgrounds — light text on a light background, or an inverted brand colour. An image of the same text is never re-coloured by dark mode, so it always looks the way you designed it. That's why images are the safe default and Live text blocks is a deliberate opt-in: turn it on when you want the copy to stay editable in your ESP and you've confirmed it holds up in dark mode.

How to turn it on

Live text blocks is a personal setting: anyone on the account can turn it on, whatever their role, and it only changes their own uploads. Teammates keep their own choice. Because only the Figma plugin can produce live text, the toggle lives only in the plugin: open Advanced Options (the gear icon) and flip Live text blocks.

With the setting on, upload from the Figma plugin as usual: any text-on-solid section comes through as an editable text block with the right background and colour, and every other section stays an image. Turn it off and those sections go back to images on the next upload. The setting has no effect on designs uploaded to the web app.

Live text works with brands connected to Klaviyo and Omnisend. In Omnisend, a text section that spans the full width of the email becomes live text; text inside a row of side-by-side columns stays an image, because Omnisend can only colour a whole row and the columns would not line up on a phone. For a brand connected to Mailchimp the setting has no effect and every section uploads as an image.

Swapping a text block back to an image

Open a plugin email in the web editor and its live text sections stay text when you update. To send one as an image instead, choose Swap to image in the section's menu.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Live text blocks off by default?

Live text renders with the colours you set, but many email clients apply a dark-mode transform that can flip those colours — light text on a light background, or an inverted brand colour. An image of the same text is never re-coloured, so images are the safe default. Turn Live text blocks on when you want the copy to stay editable in Klaviyo and you've checked it holds up in dark mode.

What qualifies as a live text block?

Only a section that is text on a single solid background colour. If the section has a photo, a gradient, multiple background colours, or graphics behind the text, it stays an image so it renders exactly as designed.

Who can turn it on?

Anyone on the account, whatever their role. It's a personal setting: each person turns it on for their own uploads, and it doesn't change anyone else's. The toggle lives in the Figma plugin's Advanced Options (the gear icon); there is no setting for it in the web app.

Does it change how images are handled?

No. Every other section still uploads as an image exactly as before. Only text-on-solid sections become native text blocks, and only while the setting is on.

Does it work for uploads from the web app?

The web app can't create them: a design uploaded there is a flattened image with no editable text to pull out. But a plugin email you open in the web editor keeps its live text sections when you update, and each one has Swap to image if you'd rather send it as an image.
